Maybe, to balance it out, transforming to and from the new form could take an action or ended the turn or something in combat. Also, I can imagine in the case of the elemental ones it might be a bit of a pain to walk around literally on fire, for example, when you’re not in combat. That being said, it kinda sucks (imho) how if you want to see where a transformation goes, unless the character is a mystic, they’ll lose their weapons and any functionality therein. I like how it can transform a character’s entire playstyle and is a pretty big choice. So, the transformations are pretty awesome. The most difficult part of making the video series was making part three, this is because the mouth and eyes are pretty hard to do (you’ll see this in the third video). The film opens on the all too familiar scene of the gang investigating a run-down gothic castle, only to reveal it as simply a story being retold by Daphne. The film would prove to be one that effectively brought the franchise roaring back to life: a new series would come four years later and Zombie Island would prove to be the first of over thirty direct-to-video films made for the franchise.įrom its very first moments, Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island strikes a near-perfect balance between the classic feel of the original show while also pulling it in a darker, more compelling direction. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island actually started life as a direct-to-video movie, ordered by Time Warner to try and capitalize on this newfound popularity. Those Cartoon Network reruns were in fact what led the franchise back to a late ’90s resurgence in popularity, after a number of follow-up iterations of the show that led to increasingly diminished returns and would eventually wind down in 1991 with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. cartoons that Cartoon Network would air on the weekends. Some of my best memories from growing up were the Saturday mornings spent at the edge of my parent’s bed, watching the reruns of classic Hanna-Barbera and Warner Bros. The Scooby-Doo franchise isn’t just one I love, it’s a foundational piece of both my love of horror and my love of animation alike (and thanks to Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost, likely to blame for my soft spot for goth women). So it was with a little bit of apprehension that I approached the idea of rewatching Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island for its twenty-fifth anniversary, as the film was a personal favorite of mine growing up. What once thrilled us as children often loses some of its appeal as we grow older-or worse, we realize that a childhood favorite is nowhere near as good as we remember it being. The game is linear with a set list of puzzles and a single solution for each. Broken Age is not hard in the classical sense or even in a way that old-school gamers might be looking for. Each character’s arc will take experienced gamers roughly two hours. This marks one of the most jaw-dropping revelations in narrative history since Luke and Darth’s paternity test results were revealed on the Maury show. Whichever story you finish first will come to a rather abrupt ending, and then later rejoined when both parts are finished. Shay will get to explore parts of the ship normally off-limits as well as navigate the galaxy conducting various rescue missions using a claw arm mini-game. Only after purposely crashing one of the simulations does he encounter a wolf (looks more like a weasel to me) who offers to show him a more exciting life outside his daily routine. Shay’s adventures are confined to his ship, although there are a few nifty holodeck-style diversions that “mom”, the ship’s computer, uses to keep him occupied and safe on a daily basis. Can she defeat the beast with a hundred eyes? Only if she can figure out how to make a tree vomit. Through a bit of traditional adventure game puzzle-solving she escapes the maw of Mog and retreats to a village in the clouds, a temporary layover on her way to Shellmound the next city on Mog Chotrha’s maiden feast world tour. Vella is wise beyond her years, or at least smarter than the townsfolk that want to serve her up as a frosted desert treat for Mog Chothra. The two characters couldn’t be more diverse, not only in gender, but on one hand you have Vella, a girl who is about to be “willingly” sacrificed” to a Cthulhu-style behemoth, and a boy trapped in a vicious cycle of playing games and eating ice cream, whose biggest concern is which breakfast cereal to eat each morning. Knowing what I know now that I’ve made it to the “to be continued” screen, I would recommend playing Vella first then Shay – not that it terribly matters, but it just seems to flow more naturally, as if that is what the designers secretly intended. ![]() This can break up any potential monotony – not bloody likely, the game is riveting – or give you a chance to step away from a challenging puzzle that may have you stumped – more likely. In a stroke of genius, you are allowed to not only decide which story to start playing first, but you can also switch back and forth between the two at any time. Broken Age is divided into two tales, one dealing with young maiden Vella, and the other of young Shay, a boy seemingly trapped on a spaceship by an overprotective “mother”. This is one of those games that is impossible to talk about without spoiling so I will keep it as general as I can while still being somewhat useful. Personally, I found the game just as enjoyable on the iPad as my PC, and if you can save $5…well, there you go. It’s worth noting that the game is only $9.99 for the iPad with an in-app purchase option for Act 2 when available while the PC version is $24 and includes Act 2 as a free update when available. That dream is now a reality as the first act of Broken Age is now available for the iPad. ![]() ![]() The Hawn Foundation’s Scientific Research Advisory Board page - which lists only one member: Kimberly Schonert-Reichl - links to Schonert-Reichl explaining how classroom mindfulness advances “Buddhist Contemplative Care” (at 38:35 of ). The Hawn Foundation website connects the dots from mindfulness to Buddhism. Learning the term mindfulness points children and parents to how to go “deeper” in practice. The curriculum insists that “to get the full benefit of MindUp lessons, children will need to know a specific vocabulary” - most crucially, the term mindfulness itself. Lesson plans use the term “mindfulness” repeatedly - to refer to any positive attitude or behavior: Picking up trash, keeping calm in emergencies, eating one’s vegetables. The MindUP curriculum is a patchwork of contributions from educators, neuroscientists, psychologists and Buddhist meditators hired by the Hawn Foundation. Some promoters of “secular” mindfulness refer to their strategy as “stealth Buddhism” (). However, simply swapping terms does not make the practice itself any less religious. The mindfulness practices at the core of MindUP are the same as those taught in Buddhist basics classes - but replacing the terms “Buddhism” and “meditation” with neuroscience vocabulary makes the curriculum sound like secular science instead of religion. Despite claims that mindfulness instills “universal” values, the above-named assumptions conflict head-on with other religious and nonreligious worldviews. Recognizing that every “self” is part of the same process of “becoming” develops moral and ethical virtues of “empathy, compassion, patience, and generosity.” Ultimately, this process leads to freedom from effects of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth, and entrance into a transcendent state of enlightenment or nirvana. This alleviates suffering by detaching the mind from pursuing desires or avoiding displeasures. The “Core Practice” of mindfulness - focusing attention on the breath and present-moment bodily sensations, while cultivating nonjudgmental awareness of passing thoughts and emotion - trains the mind to perceive experiences, and the notion of a “self,” as transient. Right mindfulness is the seventh aspect of the eightfold path of Buddhist awakening. Speaking before the Dalai Lama Center for Peace-Education, actress Goldie Hawn credits “His Holiness” with the birth of MindUP - and boasts that neuroscience packaging is a “script” to make Buddhist religious contemplative practices acceptable in schools (youtu.be/7pLhwGLYvJU). These facts suggest that MindUP may not only teach children how the brain works, but also promote Buddhist mindfulness meditation, a religious practice.Īccording to the MindUP curriculum, the “signature daily routine of the MindUP program” is the “Core Practice” of mindfulness meditation, practiced three times daily in the classroom. 30 front-page article on MindUP - and the MCCSC school-board presentation it reported - omit some key facts.
